Fixed!

Elsevier have fixed the ScienceDirect login problem for us, so next time you log in to ScienceDirect via the University Portal, you shouldn’t see the confusing, multiple login options that were there before.

Multiple options for logging in to ScienceDirect

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

On-campus users might notice something strange when they come to log in to ScienceDirect via the University Portal:

Screenshot of ScienceDirect 'Choose Organization' screen.

You’ll be presented with a ‘Choose Organization’ screen, with two options for logging in: “Athens” or “Library”.

  • You can select either option to access the database – it won’t affect your access to ScienceDirect.

This should only happen when you’re logging on from a University computer in the University Library / one of the LRCs, or a faculty I.T. lab or office machine, or via wi-fi within the University’s buildings – you won’t get this message when logging in remotely.

Library and Learning Resources are working with Elsevier to resolve this problem in a way which doesn’t affect on- or off-campus access, and we’ll let you know when things are back to normal!

New e-journals from Pavilion

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

We now have access to a couple of electronic journals from Pavilion Publishing: the British Journal of Forensic Practice (issn: 1463-6646), and the Journal of Children’s Services (issn: 1746-6660).

You can access them and find out more on our Electronic Journals A-to-Z…

http://atoz.ebsco.com/titles.asp?id=1710&aid=1244&aname=Pavilion+Journals

Because this is a new e-journal provider for us, we’d be very interested in hearing about any access problems.

Student survey (you said… we say…!)

Monday, August 11th, 2008

To help us plan the library services that you need, we carried out a survey in June 2008 to find out which service areas and resources you would like us to prioritise for development.

“Library and Learning Resources run regular surveys of you, our student users, to find out what you think of our services, and to identify what service improvements you would like us to prioritise.”

Thanks very much to everyone who completed the survey. The full results are available to download now from the University Portal, at: http://visit.lincoln.ac.uk/C19/C4/LLRsurvey/

The following is a summary of key results by campus, together with our responses… (more…)

Ancient experiments in blogging

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

My first post!

You should now see, below Michelle’s inaugural blog post, some old University Library news stories dating from last year (2007).

These were from an experimental news blog which I ran on the University’s PebblePad PDP* software, and which I’ve captured from the PebblePad RSS feed and imported into this blog using WordPress’s “import” function…

…they’re here purely for the sake of historical completeness!

You’ll see that the text of each of the posts has been cut off after (quick count) 300 or so characters. I’ve no idea why it’s done this – whether it’s a function of PebblePad’s RSS output, or something that WordPress has done. If anyone knows how to fix it, let me know and I’ll try again.

The original PebblePad blog is still out there for comparison at: http://pebblepad.lincoln.ac.uk/viewasset.aspx?oid=2098&type=blog

A blog with no name…

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Welcome to the library blog!

What can you expect to find? Well, this is a Library & Learning Resources blog so you will find news, announcements and information about library services at each of the campuses here at the University of Lincoln.

Let us know what you think , post your comments and enjoy.

…remember blogs need names too.
