Normal service has been resumed, and the MyiLibrary e-books are working again. Our customer service representative tells us there was a general authentication problem with the e-books, affecting everybody, not just Lincoln!

You can now read 804 (and counting) MyiLibrary e-books, from a whole range of subject areas, all listed on our catalogue. Including some of our most-popular titles:

Athens login problems – Global Market Info. Database

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I’ve just found out that users of the Global Market Information Database (a.k.a. Euromonitor) are experiencing a problem logging in via the University Portal, via Athens.

It’s the same problem affecting FAME, Mintel Reports, and Westlaw… when you click on the link in the Portal to log in to the database, it asks you for a username and password… again, and again, and again. Even if you put the correct details in (network\username), it still won’t give you access.

Very annoying!

The (temporary) solution is the same for all 4 problem databases – log in to MyAthens at the following address:

https://auth.athensams.net/setsite.php?id=LINCUNI&ath_dspid=ATHENS.MY_BETA&ath_returl=http%3A%2F%2Fauth.athensams.net%2Fmy%2F

…and select ‘Global Market Information Database’ (or FAME; Mintel; Westlaw) from the ‘Resources‘ page – this will give you access to the database.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused: we are working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

IOLIS CD-ROM back online

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Back in September, we reported that access to the IOLIS Law Courseware Consortium legal study CD-ROM was unavailable owing to a technical problem with our CD-ROM server.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that IOLIS is finally back online!

You can access our CD-ROM server (on campus only, unfortunately) from this link, or from the University desktop by going to Start > All Programs > Information > Network CD services.

There’s more information about IOLIS itself, at:

New help guide for Factiva

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Factiva may provide access to more than 8,000 international sources including major newspapers, newswires and a wide selection of journals, but it can be difficult to find a specific journal, newspaper or magazine article.

So, we’ve produced a quick 2-page help guide (which you can access via the University Portal) which shows you how to select an individual title in Factiva, and narrow your search using key words and the date of publication.

Factiva is a particularly useful e-resource for company information and business news. You can access it via the Portal, at:

(From off campus, you will need to log in using network\username and password.) N.B. we only have a five-user license for Factiva, so if you are asked for a username and password, it means that 5 users are already logged on.

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Elsevier have announced that the ScienceDirect database will be unavailable (to allow for scheduled maintenance) between 1:00am – 1:00pm on Sunday the 2nd of November.

(They’ve also given advance warning that S.D. will be unavailable on the 15th of November, too. We’ll put the details here when we know them.)

Online reading lists – fixed!

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Online reading lists should now be available again, for those courses that are using them.

LearnBuild, who supply us with the online reading-list plugin for Blackboard, have fixed the problem that was blocking access to the site.

If your course are not using online reading lists, you can see an example of one here.

Get free(!) Microsoft software developer and designer tools from DreamSpark

Friday, October 17th, 2008

This scheme from Microsoft will give you free access to some really useful software packages for students on a whole range of courses: Animation; Audio / Media / Multimedia / Web Technology; Computing / Games Computing; Journalism; Media Production; Media, Culture & Communications and more…

“a software giveaway that will ultimately provide millions of college and high school students around the world with access to the latest Microsoft developer and designer tools at no charge to unlock their creative potential and set them on the path to academic and career success.”

To use this fantastic resource, you will need a Windows Live ID, and your University login credentials (network\accountID and password).

For help with this process, you can contact either:

Here are the steps involved in getting hold of this software:

1. Visit the Microsoft DreamSpark website at:

2. Click on ‘Sign In’ in the top right-hand corner.

3. Sign in using your Windows Live ID (a single-sign on username and password you can use to access various Microsoft websites and services). If you don’t already have a Windows Live ID, you can get one from: www.passport.net

4. Select the software package you want to download. If you can’t see the package you’re interested in, click on ‘View all Products’ near the bottom of the screen.

5. Read the notes and system requirements, and click on ‘Verify’ (you should already be signed in).

6. From the ‘Step 1: Select your region’ map, click on Europe.

7. From the ‘Step 2: Select your country’ drop-down box, select ‘United Kingdom’.

8. From the ‘Step 3: Select your school/organization’ drop-down box, select ‘University of Lincoln’ and hit ‘Select and Continue’.

9. You should now see the Athens login screen. You don’t need a separate Athens password to access this software – if you see the Athens username/password box, click on ‘Alternative login’.

10. In the ‘Quick search’ box, search for University of Lincoln and hit ‘Go’.

11. Then click on ‘University of Lincoln’ in the returned list of organisations.

12. Click on ‘Go to the University of Lincoln login page’.

13. Now you can enter your normal login details which you would use to access the University Portal. For most people, this will be in the format: User Name = network\accountID, plus your normal University password.

14. That’s it! You should now see a screen telling you that you can download the software.
