Check out our new public Web page

Friday, November 28th, 2008

As part of a review of all of the Library’s information on the World Wide Web, we have revamped our public Web presence at: www.lincoln.ac.uk/lr

We’d very much like to know what you think of it – what do you like about it? Is it easy to use? How could we improve it? What’s missing? What other information and services would you like to be able to access from that page?

Below is a composite image of the page – click for bigger. Our thanks to University Website manager Chris Goddard for his invaluable work on this.

Next… we tackle the Portal.

The mystery of the knitted book-cosies…

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Parts of Lincolnshire had a couple of inches of snow at the weekend, so perhaps that explains why a mystery knitter has been crocheting woolly jackets for our books and leaving them on the shelves in the GCW University Library, for our bemused shelving team to find.

Yes, you read that right…

(Event recreated for dramatic purposes...)

(Dramatic reconstruction of the event...)

The shelvers have discovered two so far: a pink one yesterday and a red one today… will any more appear?

(If you're interested, one is a bookon sustainable architecture, the other a bound volume of an HRM journal)

(In case you were wondering, one is a book on sustainable architecture, the other a bound volume of a management journal...)

We’re quite at a loss for an explanation (Guerilla art statement? Fashion-student-on-a-mission? Subtly satirical comment on the heating in the GCW?), although the general consensus amongst the library staff is that they’re quite lovely. Certainly, we’d like to thank our anonymous knitter for brightening up our day.

We have but one request: next time, could you add a zip, or perhaps some buttons, so that we can get the books out again..?

And—whoever you are—can we interest you in any of these titles?

Problems accessing Cambridge University Press journals

Friday, November 21st, 2008

We seem to be having problems logging in to subscription journal titles from Cambridge Journals Online. Users are getting the following error message:

Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Cambridge University Press say:

“the problem is likely the connection between CJO and Athens, as customers have reported no trouble accessing other publishers’ systems via Athens.  We have reported our findings to the Athens helpdesk and are presently awaiting their feedback.”

We’ll let you know as soon as the problem has been fixed.

24/4 – and apologies for the disruption

Work began recently on Enterprise@Lincoln, which will be located between Sparkhouse Studios and the University Library. This new, state of the art, sustainable building will be a physical hub for the University’s enterprise and employer engagement activity, and will support the creation of highly skilled jobs by increasing the number of new start businesses in Lincolnshire.

The project is expected to take 46 weeks to construct, and at certain times during the construction process, staff and students will encounter disruption such as noise and dust.

One such period will occur at the beginning of December, during the pile-driving process, and to mitigate against disruption, the University Library will be open for 24 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, for two weeks, from 1st – 11th December 2008.  We hope that this will help, and apologies for any inconvenience.

Building work next to the University Library

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The building work behind the GCW

Work will begin on Enterprise@Lincoln, the University of Lincoln’s newest building, in the week commencing 10 November 2008.

Located between Sparkhouse Studios and the GCW University Library, the new building will be a physical hub for the University’s enterprise and employer engagement activity.

This state of the art, sustainable building will:

  • Provide a gateway for the University’s employer engagement services
  • Support the creation of higher skilled jobs
  • Increase the number of new start businesses in Lincolnshire
  • Provide space for expanding ventures moving on from Sparkhouse
  • Provide the facilities to increase and improve knowledge transfer from the University.

The project, which has been part-funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and Lincolnshire Enterprise, is expected to take 46 weeks to construct.

The Lindum Group will be the contractors undertaking the work on behalf of the University.

The building has been designed by Stem Architects to:

  • Efficiently use campus space by infilling and addressing the river frontage
  • Maximise environmental sustainability in many ways including the use of a “green roof” and recycled materials
  • Achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) “Excellent” rating
  • Exceed Building Regulations requirements for energy efficiency.

The project is being delivered under the management of the University’s Estates Department.

At certain times during the construction process, staff and students will encounter disruption such as noise and dust. Every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum and staff and students will be supported through the works.

A full health and safety plan has been put in place and ongoing consultation with all stakeholders and neighbours is being carried out.

Construction begins in November 2008. Enterprise@Lincoln opens in Autumn 2009.

Regular updates will be posted throughout the works period at:
