JSTOR bug fixed

Monday, April 27th, 2009

jstor_logoA message from JSTOR technical support regarding the login problem we were having last week:

“This morning we released an update to the JSTOR platform that should fix the Shibboleth authentication problems some users have been experiencing.”

You should now be able to log in to JSTOR via the University Portal (in the usual way), with no problems. From off-campus, you will need to log in using network\username and password.

“JSTOR is a not–for–profit organization dedicated to helping the scholarly community discover, use, and build upon a wide range of intellectual content in a trusted digital archive. The University of Lincoln has full-text access to the JSTOR Arts & Sciences collections I, II and III.”

Update: JSTOR access, temporary fix

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

If anyone is still having problems logging in to JSTOR, their technical support have informed me that they have “now isolated the bug and plan to release the fix very soon”.

In the meantime, you should be able to access JSTOR at this temporary link:

http://libresproxy.lincoln.ac.uk/v

To access JSTOR at this address, you will need to log in using network\username and password.

JSTOR access problems

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Our apologies that lots of people are seeing the following error when trying to access the JSTOR service, whether on- or off-campus:

“It appears that your institution does not allow you off-campus access due to your status”

JSTOR have confirmed that:

“this is a known issue, specifically for users logging into JSTOR via Shibboleth for the first time. These users are being denied access, while returning users should not experience any problems.

“This problem is due to a bug inadvertently introduced during a recent maintainance code release. Our development team recognize the problem and will be releasing a fix shortly.”

We are working with JSTOR on fixing the problem and will post an update here as soon as it is resolved.

DVD OF THE WEEK: Ladykillers (1955)

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

A classic black comedy from the famous Ealing studios.

When a gang of thieves decide to take lodgings in the home of an ageing spinster whilst they plan their next ‘job’ (a security van robbery at Kings Cross), they get more than they could ever have dreamt of in the form of Octagarian Mrs Louisa Wilberforce (Katie Johnson).

Led by Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness), the gang pretend to be an amateur string quartet musical group renting the room space for practice, thus also carrying empty musical instrument cases everywhere with them to maintain the deception.

After the robbery has been achieved, the game is given away when One-Round (Danny Green) accidently gets his cello case full of money trapped in the doorway as they are leaving the house. He attempts to pull it free only for the bank notes to fall all over the porch. Mrs Wilberforce realises the truth and informs Marcus that she intends to report them to the police. The gang realise that she must therefore be eliminated, and this is where the fun really begins…

Being such a kindly old lady, no one wants to do the dirty deed and the gang end up drawing matches. The Major (Cecil Parker) loses but attempts to make a run with the stash. Bickering and fighting breaks out amongst the gang whilst Mrs Wilberforce peacefully sleeps through it all.

The result being that the criminals end up killing each other, which they have no qualms about, but find it impossible to kill a sweet old lady. The final twist to the tale is heart warming and a joy to watch in the best British Comedy tradition…

Brimming with classic scenes and excellent performances from all involved, the Ladykillers remains one of Ealing’s finest comedies and is worthy of several viewings just to appreciate the intricate weavings of the BAFTA award winning script by William Rose.

Available to take home today in the ground floor of the library and shelved at 791.4372 LAD.

Possible loss of IT provision – Sunday 26th April

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

An urgent message from University of Lincoln ICT services:

Due to on-going work to maintain and enhance business continuity provision, essential back up power testing will be carried out this Sunday morning (26th April).  The tests will be carried out on the AMC Communications room and it is expected this will result in no loss of service. However in case of any remedial work that is required following the tests, power maybe shutdown. As a worse case the shutdown would be from 8 am to 12 noon and will impact on ICT service delivery to the Brayford Campus and remote sites. Both computer and telephone services would be unavailable during this period. ICT will endeavour to minimise any disruption that may occur.

ICT apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
