ian

Ian Snowley has joined the University as the new Director of Library and Learning Resources.

He has an impressive background in improving learning resources having been Head of Higher Education at the British Library in London and Director of Academic Services at The University of London Research Library Services at Senate House. He was also President of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in 2007.

“We have some fantastic facilities here and I’m looking forward to helping to develop them even further,” he says. I think that the student and staff satisfaction with the Library is fundamental, so I’ll be looking at ways in which we can expand our facilities here such as increasing e-resources, developing the Library space and introducing more research facilities for post-graduates and staff”

Inter-library loan: suspension of Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) service for new users

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Because of the ongoing problems with Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) of articles ordered via our inter-library loan system, Library & Learning Resources have taken the decision to temporarily disable the SED option for newly-registered users until we have a stable software delivery platform for articles in electronic format.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused, and we’d like to assure you that we are trying to resolve this problem.

  • For any existing users of the inter-library loan service who have been happily using SED delivery without software problems, we can continue to offer the option of SED delivery. Please annotate your copyright declaration form “SED please” or similar.

All students and staff – you can access the inter-library loan system, and place requests for book loans and postal delivery of paper copies of articles, on the University Portal.

“The inter-library loans service enables you to borrow items (or to receive electronic copies of items) from other libraries via the British Library. You can request books, journal articles, theses, proceedings and patents. There is a 50p copyright charge for some requests.”

A further message from Mimas Zetoc Support:

I am pleased to say that the Zetoc service is now available again following this morning’s hardware fault on a shared storage controller which occurred at
03:31 BST and affected access to many Mimas services.

Mimas would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this disruption to the service.

The Zetoc – British Library Electronic Table of Contents (ToC) service allows you to search the tables of contents of all 20,000 journals and 16,000 conference records held by the British Library, from 1993 onwards. You can also set up ToC alerts via email or RSS feed.

You can access Zetoc via the University Portal:

Update for British Library SED service users

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

If you are attempting to download an SED document delivered by email from the British Library and are presented with the screen shown below, please select Adobe Reader. This should open your document immediately for viewing and printing. The document will also be available to view through Adobe Reader’s Digital Editions for the usual fourteen day period.

Do not select Digital Editions as you will be prompted to upgrade your software. This is an unnecessary step and will result in you being unable to download your document.

If you have any queries regarding this information please contact acquisitions@lincoln.ac.uk. Thank you.

Attention all users of British Library (BL) Secure Electronic Delivery (SED)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is required to download documents electronically from the BL.

From 1 April 2009 onwards new installations of the Adobe Reader cannot be supported. Users who have not installed ADE before this date and who have requested SED through the Inter-library loan service will not be able to download their articles. If you receive an article via e-mail from the BL and have not previously installed the ADE software, please forward the message to acquisitions@lincoln.ac.uk. We will print the article on your behalf. Please indicate whether you would like to collect the article and from which site. Alternatively, we can post the article out to you.

You will not be affected if you have successfully installed ADE and downloaded documents before 30 March.

We are working to provide an alternative solution and will keep you informed of progress.
