Holbeach’s e-journals are in the frame

Monday, March 1st, 2010

If you look to the right of the library staff desk in our Holbeach Campus LRC, you’ll see a new bit of library furniture…

We’ve invested in a little digital photo frame which we’re now using to display a slideshow of the ‘top 30′ electronic journals for food manufacturing and agriculture.

(Image: our new digital photo frame in situ!)

Each slide displays essential information about one e-journal title – its publication details, a copy of the cover of the most recent issue, and the details of the University of Lincoln’s full-text online access to that e-journal.

You’ll also see a couple of options on each slide for getting access to that title online via our e-journals A-to-Z:

  1. A short-form web link (example: http://nn.nf/002c), designed to be easy for you to note down;
  2. The same link encoded as a black & white, two-dimensional barcode known as a QR Code. If you have a smartphone / camera phone with the correct software, you can use it to scan the QR code, and your phone’s web browser should take you straight to the e-journal. (QR codes seem to be taking off in libraries… I’d be interested to hear whether you think they’re a useful feature or not.)

We’ll be keeping the digital photo frame up to date with the top 30-ish e-journals in the subjects of food manufacturing, food science & technology, and agriculture.

For the moment, the following titles are in the frame:

***Asterisked titles are also available as current subscriptions in paper (yes, paper!) format in the library collection at Holbeach.

Freshinfo, new e-Library resource for food & agriculture

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The Library now provides access to this useful online resource for food manufacturing and agriculture:

Freshinfo is the online version of the Fresh Produce Journal (issn:0967-6899, published by Lockwood Press Ltd).

Our subscription to the FPJ (copies held in the Holbeach Campus LRC) gives you searchable, full-text access to the ‘News & Features’ section of the Freshinfo website.

To access these news & features online:

  1. Use the e-journals A-to-Z to search for ‘Freshinfo’, or follow this direct link.
  2. Within the A-to-Z record for Freshinfo, click on the link to ‘Lockwood Press Ltd’:
  3. If you are off campus, you will need to log in at this point using your network\accountID and password.
  4. Once you have been logged in to the Freshinfo website, click on the link to ‘News & Features’:
  5. By default, you will see news stories from the last 14 days. You can then use the search box to search for articles from the FPJ’s archives.

E-journals A-to-Z – slow logging in

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The login button on the e-journals A-to-Z is taking a long time to actually log users in today, or else is ‘freezing’ completely.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused – we’ve reported the problem to EBSCO (who provide the A-to-Z service) and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s fixed.

In the meantime, you can still use the A-to-Z to search for the journal you need, even without logging in.

Once you’ve linked out to a journal’s website, you should then be able to log in to that individual site and access the full text of any articles.

Please contact your Academic Subject Librarian or email athens@lincoln.ac.uk if you have any problems.

Update on the problems with our library system

Monday, January 25th, 2010

A message from University of Lincoln ICT services about the ongoing lack of access to the library catalogue and issue/return of books:

An engineer is due on-site this afternoon at which time we will have a better understanding of when the system can be returned to normal service. However, at this time we do not expect the system to be back on line before 6:00 pm this evening at the earliest.

Once again ICT  apologise for the inconvenience to staff and students and we will, of course, keep you updated on progress.

E-books, e-journals and databases can still be accessed via the University Portal while the library catalogue is unavailable.

500+ journals online via SAGE Premier

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

The University Library is delighted to announce this significant improvement to our e-journal collections:

The SAGE Premier 2010 collection provides full-text access to more than 500 journals across a whole range of subjects (Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology and Medicine) with access to articles from 1999 onwards.

You can look up individual SAGE journals, by title, by searching the University’s e-journals A-to-Z – or you can log in via the Portal to search across the whole collection (either on SAGE’s own platform, or via the SwetsWise search interface) and locate individual articles by keyword.

Contact your Academic Subject Librarian for more information on using the SAGE Premier collection; also see SAGE’s help site.

We’ve updated our coverage of 133 journal titles from Wiley InterScience on the e-journals A-to-Z, so it should now be more accurate.

You can see the list of titles here.

Wiley provide online access to some of the most heavily-used e-journals at the University of Lincoln, including:

Help with logging in to LexisLibrary via the e-journals A-to-Z

Friday, December 11th, 2009

A number of students and staff have asked for help with the – slightly tricky – process of logging in to a particular journal title within the LexisLibrary legal and news sources package, via the e-journals A-to-Z site.

screenshot_atoz_lexishelp

So, we’ve created a step-by-step help guide which explains the process, with screenshots of each step. There’s a link to the help guide next to each LexisLibrary title on the A-to-Z.

LexisLibrary is a…

…legal and news/current affairs database providing access to a range of case law, legislation, commentary, current awareness, and newspaper services. Includes the full text of volumes 1-50 of Halsbury’s Laws of England (an authoritative narrative covering every aspect of English statute and case law), up-to-date legislation containing over 18,000 full text acts, and the All England Law Reports. LexisLibrary also provides access via a “News” tab to full-text newspaper articles from national, local and regional UK newspapers.

(We’ve also created a similar guide for accessing ScienceDirect journals from off-campus, which can be similarly troublesome.)

Q: which other e-journal packages do you find tricky to access?

Let us know, and we’ll try and demystify the process!

Also… don’t forget to fill in our survey…

Sage e-journals have been updated

Friday, December 11th, 2009

We have updated our electronic journals that we subscribe to through Sage. Following titles have been added to our subscription:

Our apologies for the interruption in access to the JoFS archive. The problem has been fixed and  you should now be able to access the archive.

This link provides access to the archive of the Journal of Forensic Science 1972 – 2005. The JoFS is the official publication of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, edited and produced by ASTM.

N.B. that current access to the journal is also available online.

Problem with Journal of Forensic Sciences online archive

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

We regret that the archive of the Journal of Forensic Sciences (1972-2005) is currently unavailable.

Access to current issues is still possible.

We’re working on restoring access and will let you know as soon as that’s been done. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
