Lincoln Book Festival: Book your place for encounter with top crime writers

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
Re-posted from the University student & staff message lists:
The LPAC will be the stage for some of the biggest names in crime fiction at this year’s Lincoln Book Festival. The venue, on the University of Lincoln’s Brayford campus, will host three events on Thursday 14 May as part of the festival’s much-anticipated Crime Day.
Top authors Michael Connelly (The Brass Verdict), RJ Ellory (A Simple Act of Violence), Karen Maitland (The Owl Killers) and Andrew Martin (The Last Train to Scarborough) will take literature lovers on a journey into the hearts of medieval murderers, hard-boiled detectives and down-at-heel lawyers.
Visitors can see all four authors in person for a special ticket price of £13 (£7 concessions).
Crime Day is just one of the highlights in the programme of events which the University will be hosting during the Lincoln Book Festival.
On Wednesday 13 May local author Grahame Lloyd will discuss his latest book, Six of the Best, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of West Indian cricketer Gary Sobers’ record-breaking achievement of hitting six sixes in the same over.
One of the country’s most talented performance poets will also be on stage at the University on Thursday 14 May. Patience Agbabi will perform a selection of her work in a free poetry reading in the EMMTEC building. She will be supported by up-and-coming poet Caleb Klaces and Creative Writing students from the University’s English department.
The curtain comes down on Sunday 17 May, when love will be in the air at the LPAC. Milly Johnson (A Spring Affair) hosts the Romance Panel – a discussion about the ever-popular but often maligned genre of romantic fiction.
The Lincoln Book Festival will see more than 60 events staged over five days at a range of venues across the city, including the University of Lincoln, Lincoln Drill Hall and The Collection.
LPAC spokesman Victoria Simpson said: “The Lincoln Book Festival is a wonderful event in the city’s cultural calendar and we’re very proud to be a part of it. Some hugely popular authors will be heading to Lincoln to talk about their work. There’s so much on offer all across the city, everyone should be able to find something which captures their imagination.”

Tickets for LPAC events are available from the LPAC and Engine Shed Box Office, open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm, by phoning 0844 888 4414 or online at www.lpac.co.uk. Minibus trip to Colindale’s newspaper archive – 18th February

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Many students will find the Reading Rooms at Colindale invaluable for any research involving newspaper archives.

http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html

A minibus trip to Colindale, north London, for students to view the British Library newspaper archives will depart on Wednesday 18th February from the Brayford campus.

The minibus will be leaving the University Library, Lincoln at 08.00 hrs to arrive at Colindale at approximately 10.30. The minibus will leave Colindale at 16.00 hrs to arrive in Lincoln at approximately 18.30hrs.

If you would like to visit Colindale, please book your place by registering at the University Library issue desk. There is a small fee of £5 when you register.

If you intend to use the Reading Room and access material from their collection, you will have to register as readers individually in their Reading Rooms. To do this, you will need to show two forms of identification, one as proof of identity showing signature (e.g. passport, credit card, driving licence) and one as proof of current address (e.g. recent utility bill, recent Bank Statement, Driving Licence with address etc) or alternatively a current British Library Pass. Please note, strictly no admittance to the Library will be permitted without proof of ID/address.

In common with other British Library Reading Rooms, they do not permit coats and bags into the Reading Room and pencils only must be used. A full list of conditions of use is on their website at http://www.bl.uk/services/reading/conditions.html

It is also advisable that you make use of the Advance Reservation service to order up to four bound volumes or microfilm reels of newspapers in advance of the visit by contacting them on 020 7412 7353 or by emailing them at bookdelivery-colindale@bl.uk  48 hours, (excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays) before your intended trip.  Colindale advise all readers to reserve material in advance of your visit as it saves time and they cannot get back to you in case of unavailability.

Best wishes

Daren Mansfield (Academic Subject Librarian)
