We get a lot of queries sent to RefWorks@lincoln.ac.uk about the correct procedure for logging in to RefWorks or Write-N-Cite if you’re presented with a “RefWorks login center” screen asking for a “Group Code”.

(Image: Red herring @ Lowestoft, Suffolk, by timparkinson.)
That login screen is a bit of a red herring – we don’t use a Group Code for RefWorks at the University of Lincoln.
So, how do you log in to RefWorks / WnC from this screen? Here’s a step-by-step guide… (N.B. these steps assume that this is the first time you’ve logged into RefWorks this way. If not, you’ll probably find you can skip some of the stages.)
- Step one: within the “RefWorks login center” screen, look below the “Group Code” box and click on the link to “Athens users“. (If you can’t see that link, then WnC has been incorrectly installed on your home computer. Try un-installing it, then re-install from this link.)

(Image: the "RefWorks login center" screen. Click for bigger.)
- Step two: you will be directed to a “RefWorks Athens Authentication Point” screen – look below the main Athens username & password box, and click on “Alternative login”.

(Image: the "RefWorks Athens Authentication Point" screen. Click for bigger.)
- Step three: you will be taken to an Athens “Find your organisation” screen. You should be able to use this screen to search for the University of Lincoln, and click on the resulting link.

(Image: the Athens "Find your organisation" screen. Click for bigger.)
- Step four: click on the link to “Go to the University of Lincoln login page”, and – if you are off campus – enter your University network\accountID and password.

That’s it! if you follow those four steps, you should be correctly logged into Write-N-Cite, or into RefWorks itself (you’ll often have to follow this login process when you’re importing search results into RefWorks from other databases or search engines on the open web).
If you’re totally new to Write-N-Cite and can’t even find it on the University desktop (it’s a little well-hidden, we know!!!), here’s a link to even more step-by-step instructions, plus a video to help you get started.
Any questions? Email: RefWorks@lincoln.ac.uk

RefWorks have announced the end of their familiar red-and-grey design, and the introduction – early in 2010 – of a new, simpler user interface. (Don’t worry – they’re going to give us 6 months get used to the change!)
“RefWorks 2.0 provides a cleaner, more streamlined interface for our users, using intuitive Web 2.0 conventions and contemporary design elements.”
You can see some previews of the new interface, along with some FAQs and a sneak-preview of their new logo on the RefWorks 2.0 website.
We’ll do our best here in Library & Learning Resources to steer you through the changes ahead. Watch this space for updated help guides and news of next year’s ‘RefWeek’ training workshops.

The missing “Athens login” link, which was stopping people from logging in to Write-N-Cite on campus the other day, has re-appeared!
RefWorks support tell me that the problem may have stemmed from some work they were recently doing on their servers.
Please let us know if you experience any more problems with WnC.
In the meantime:
Happy citing.

We’re seeing some problems with access to the Write-N-Cite (WnC) plugin for RefWorks.
The usual “Athens login” link has disappeared from the WnC login screen, so you won’t be able to access your RefWorks account through WnC in the usual way.

Normal access to RefWorks via the Portal is unaffected.
Apologies for the inconvenience and disruption caused – we are in contact with RefWorks support and hope to have the problem fixed a.s.a.p.
Normal access to RefWorks via the Portal is unaffected.

The University now offers lifelong, free access to RefWorks for alumni.
If you have recently graduated and would like to sign up for alumni access:
Once your alumni account has been created, it will be your responsibility to keep your contact details (i.e. email address) up-to-date within your RefWorks account.
Your alumni account will remain active as long as the University of Lincoln subscribes to RefWorks. If we were ever to cancel our RefWorks subscription (N.B. we have no plans at present to do this!), you would no longer be eligible for alumni access.
-
To access your RefWorks alumni account (once it has been created), you can
log in here (not for current students or staff!)

You can now keep updated on e-books available on your level 1 food degree reading lists by following this link to a RefWorks shared folder.
This will link you to a list within RefWorks which you can export into your own bibliographies and folders. The list will be continuously updated as more e-books become available and by subscribing to the RSS feed you will be sure to be notified.

There is more to come for food levels 2+3 and agriculture levels 1-3 so watch this space!
